Hi Brew,

Quite honestly, wish you came here before dealer. Only because perhaps you could have went aftermarket and saved a lot of cash. EHU is simply "Saab talk" for Electronic Head Unit. Basically, they're referring to the whole radio assembly w/ all its built in features. $3000 is a lot. But, I know from experience that SAAB, AUDI, BMW, and Mercedes - have very expensive Audio Head Units.. And, most of what you paid for - was for the PART. It's not like the dealer did you in. My guess is there may be an hour or so labor to put it in. Perhaps an hour to diagnose and even .5-1.0 (hrs) to "code" the unit after install. So perhaps 400-500 of the bill is labor. The rest is that EHU and tax. How would I handle it? Well, if I loved my car and was into keeping it ALL OEM and not dealing with non oem parts (and possible compatibility issues) I'd do nothing - other then call another SAAB Dealer. Ask what they would charge to replace your EHU (parts and labor) If their price is A LOT cheaper (not $50 cheaper, more like 500+ cheaper) I'd call SAAB of America, customer support, and complain. If the other dealer is same thing, I'd just deal with it and realize that at least you have a nice new EHU - and car is still all OEM. OK? (oem = original equipment manufacturer) Thanks for reading and my best to you!

I did not have that dealer work on my car. Stereo did not get fixed because quite honestly can not afford it. So you think I should call another dealer or go with an aftermarket. Do you think the dealer could be wrong as it took them 12 hours of labor just to tell me that. I refused to pay the 12 hours got my car back and had to pay 250.00 for them telling what they thought the issue was.

Hi Bew,

Ahhh, I see. Glad to hear that! YES - do both. Call at least ONE more SAAB dealer. Ask for (break down of) parts and labor costs. Ask if any of labor is diagnostic time or software coding. (just so you know cost or EHU) Lastly, call 2 local stereo shops. One should be a chain like 'Best Buy' (my friend works as stereo installer at a NJ Best Buy, and he's REALLY good at what he does) and call a "mom and pop" independent stereo shop. Get options and prices. And - make sure Best Buy and Mom/Pop Stereo shops can 'guarantee in writing' that whatever unit they install, will not only work - but will NOT cause you to LOSE any factory Audio Features. Meaning, say your factory Saab unit has built in blue tooth for cell phone call, to get piped out to factory speakers. Why lose that? Compare Apples to Apples and all will be well. Thanks again for reading and have an awesome weekend!

Best,

Answer

PS - the dealer in NO WAY should even DREAM of taking/charging you 12 hours - to tell you that EHU is bad. That's INSANE. I work at a very LARGE independent shop - in NJ. I'm known in my area, as an electrical expert.. Dealers send me cars they cannot fix. (yes, it's flattering but I've earned my stripes in 20+ years) Even a nightmare stereo issue, takes no more then 1-2 hours to diagnose - unless a tech does not know his trade. The $250 is a little pricey, but is acceptable. That's 1-2 hours labor. 12 hours (on other hand) would be totally unacceptable. OK? You were smart to refuse to pay! :)
