Question

I adopted a kitten from a shelter who was very sick with parasites/diarrhea and then an URI. She took antibiotics for both and was dewormed and has gained weight and is now very playful. Yesterday I noticed a small, dry hard bump on the bridge of her nose. It still has the hair on it and is not red or inflamed. I have not noticed any sneezing or coughing but her nares always has what looks like dried yellowish drainage on it (very slight) but I don't ever see any active drainage. History: Her sinus infection/URI was so bad that she had bloody discharge when she was sick. I got her in mid-July and she spent 2 weeks on a sulfa antibiotic and then 2 weeks on augmentin. She was about 10-12 weeks old when I got her and she weighed 1 1/2 pounds. She probably weighs about 3 to 3 1/2 pounds now. She also had an infected eye and blisters in her eye and mouth when I got her and I had to feed her hi-calorie vet paste for a week or so till she could eat catfood. Any ideas what the bump could be?

Answer

This little bump could be something as simple as acne. I would watch it closely. If it grows or becomes painful or irritating, I would have your vet take a look. In the meantime, just watch it, I have a feeling it may resolve.
I hope this helps and gives you peace of mind
Thanks

What other things could it be? I was just worried about how it just all of a sudden popped up.

There is a mass called a histiocytoma that occurs in younger animals that can regress on its own. These are more common in dogs but I have seen them in cats. Insect bites are also a possiblity but I would expect rapid resolution. There is also something called Eosinophillic granulomatous complex (thats a mouthful- basically an allergy). However, I would expect to see this in a little bit older cat (> 1yr). The lesions often occur around the mouth and can respond to antibiotics or steroids. I expect this lump to be gone within a month or two, but if you have her spayed (if she is not already) you could have your vet aspirate it or removed it while she is under.
I know this is vague but the best diagnostic at this point is an aspirate of the mass. The problem is that it is an expense in something I expect to resolve. If you want peace of mind, see your ve and have it done. At least then you will be able to rest easy about it or you will be able to treat accordingly.
I hope this helps
