Question

My 21 yr old cat has done blind and is almost completely deaf. She wanders around the house crying a lot and nothing I do seems to calm her down. What can I do to make her feel safe and secure?

Info Request

Hello,

Has your cat been diagnosed with any medical problems?

Has she had a recent vet visit?

Is she eating, drinking and eliminating normally?

Thanks,
Cher

We have not taken her to a vet recently, other than the blindness and hearing loss she has not had any medical problems. She is eating, drinking and eliminating as she normally does, no slow downs there at all.

Hello again, and thanks for your reply.

I'm glad to hear all her usual activities are normal! For a cat this age, that's excellent, and you are to be commended for certainly doing everything right for her in all these years! : )

Because of her blindness and hearing loss, she may be feeling disoriented and developing a form of dementia, just as aged humans may experience. The constant meowing can be due to this feeling of panic, not exactly sure what room she's in or where you are, and also, because she has hearing loss, she can't hear her own voice as distinctly as she had in the past, so she's 'testing' it to make sure it's really her, and not another cat, she's hearing.

What you can do to help her feel more secure, in addition to what you're already doing, is try to confine her to a smaller area of the house, so she can't wander and feel 'lost', plus, you can always be near her; make sure not to move her food, water, litter, or any furniture, as she's used to getting around based on the 'configuration' of the rooms she knows, and try to have a vet come to you, if it is too stressful to bring her to the office, so she can have a routine senior blood test. Sometimes, older cats will develop hyperthyroidism, and this can include increased vocalization as a symptom.

I hope all will be well with your furry girl.
