Optional Information
Make (of engine): Polaris
Model (of engine): Visage TX
Year: 2002
Already Tried:
We got in this jet ski that would not run. Diagnosed the problem as a blown front engine cylinder with damaged carburetor. Customer authorized these repairs. Put in new piston, new sleeve, carburetor kit, gasket set, had machine shop repair jug and replace sleeve. Took to the lake and it ran fine just testing in the water while on the trailer. Customer picked up, took to the lake and would not run as they got past the "wake" area. Same cylinder is again blown and carburetors are leaking gas. Was told by another mechanic that the problem is the CDI box and if the same work is done again without replacing the CDI box, the cylinder will blow again. So, this problem ends up being electrical? Customer is taking us to small claims for amount of original bill.

Answer
Hi,
The guy that said it's a CDI is an idiot.
And why are you resleeving it? Just bore it .50 over.
Drop in a new piston and go.
Also Check that front crank seal.
And where are the carburetors leaking gas from?
If you put in rebuild kits and they are leaking gas then someone did something wrong.
I will say Polaris Domestic engines are notorious for excessive vibration to the point of rattling the carbs loose from the intake but it won't rattle them apart to the point of them leaking gas.

I talked to my mechanic and I need to reclarify the situation.....The customer brought in the Polaris Jet Ski that had the front jug blown and asked to have it rebuilt and asked to have the carburetors rebuilt. He said that was all he wanted done. We rebuilt the carburetors with new Polaris kits that this model calls for. We put in a new Wiseco piston and a sleeve and put the engine back together. That's all the customer wanted done. We took it to the lake and it ran good. The customer says his wife took it out about 40 yards from the dock and it totally quit. She got it restarted and went about another 30 yards and it quit again and would not restart. Both pistons, the new one and the other had 2" holes burnt completely through in the center. Customer said when he pulled the ski back to the dock there was gas in the bottom of the ski. Our mechanic thinks the gas came from the hole in the piston when they were "cranking" it, trying to restart it after it quit. They said they only drove it approximately 70 yards. Would that short distance cause the front piston to burn a 2" hole in it? What do you think caused the problem if it wasn't electrical. The ski also has an automatic oiler. We talked to a Polaris dealer in NY who said the timing could have been off in the CDI box and caused it. Your opinion?
Accepted Answer
Nope
Not the CDI.
Timing never changes by the CDI on this ski.
If the flywheel key is no sheared and the stator plate is timed properly, It's not electrical.
A hole in the top of the piston is caused by a couple things.
Old gas or too high of octane gas, Or the wrong spark plugs.
The customer is lying through their teeth saying 70 yards.
I don't care if you are running straight gas with zero oil at wide open. That ski will go half a mile before it blows up.
However lets assume that the customer is correct on it running and dying, running and dying.
Odds are they rode it for a little bit, It got hot and died while damaging the engine a little bit. But not enough to keep it from restarting.
Rode it a little more, got it hot again, and it died etc.
Until the motor is junk again.
So the problem is finding out why exactly it's doing this.
If there's gas in the bottom of the ski in any quantity then you probably have a problem, usually with a loose fuel hose.
You will not get gas in the bottom of the ski by cranking it over ever.
It sounds to me like your mechanic has some learning to do.
Are you sure the engine was put together right in the first place.
Was the sleeve put in right? Was the new piston put in the right direction?
Either way. Now all 3 are burnt up. and without being able to be there to do a hands on inspection I can't exactly tell you where to go with this.
It could be anything from a pinched line to the jet pump to too hot of spark plugs put in it.
There's just too many variables.
