Question

we have a cat 2 yrs old we purchased from seacca (downey, ca). he is a solid white cat named Alex. he is also deaf. he has always been in perfect health. playful, eats good, drinks
good. for about 3 days now, he has been lethargic. he doesn't eat or drink. he just hides under the bed and lays there not wanting to move. I don't see any external injuries. we keep him on a leash when he goes outside because he can't hear. I'm really worried about him. I have 4 children that just started school this week so buying school clothes and such has tapped me out for the next two months. I was hoping to find out some things to check him for myself or if anyone knows a free place to take him i would really appreciate it.

Hello,

I am sorry your kitty is not feeling well.

Is he vomiting? Diarrhea?

Has he been able to urinate? How long ago?

Does his belly hurt?

Does he get any people food?

What color are his gums?

no vomiting, diarrhea. he hasn't urinated in 2 days that i know of. he does not eat people food. he did eat some yogurt (pina colada) a couple of licks 3 days ago. his belly doesn't seem to hurt. his gums are light pink. he took a couple of bites of wet food last night. i fed him by hand.

i was wondering if maybe a spider bit him or something. If they bite animals.

Answer

Thank you for the additional information. Spiders do bite animals, but I do not think that this is what has happened with your kitty, because he is not showing typical symptoms. Based on the history you provided, it is impossible to give you a narrow list of possibilities as to what is making him ill, but I can give you some ideas as to what may be going on. He may have an illness called pancreatitis from the yogurt he was fed several days ago (yogurt is people food and even the smallest amount is enough to make your kitty ill), since there is no vomiting, it could be in the early stages or very low grade. He could have an auto-immune disease or any number of cardiac conditions. He could have injured himself while playing and is sore as a result. He may have a urinary tract infection........or it might be something other than what I have listed. In spite of the fact that I cannot tell you what is wrong for sure, I can tell you that your kitty will get into big trouble if he is not seen by a vet ASAP. He needs to be examined, have some blood tests, urine tests and x-rays taken to try and find out what is going on. He may be sick enough that he needs to be hospitalized and put on iv fluids, since he has been sick for so long. He is not eating anywhere near enough, nor is he taking in enough water. It is VERY dangerous for a kitty to go too long without eating and drinking enough to sustain themselves, as they are prone to a few illnesses that are very expensive and difficult to manage, especially when they appear as the result of an untreated problem. Cats that cannot eat because they are sick are particularly prone to an illness called hepatic lipidosis. This illness is devastating and can be fatal. Your kitty CANNOT wait to be seen until Tuesday. Every day that passes without medical attention means that he is becoming more ill, and you will likely need to spend more money to make him well again. Time is of the essence here. Your local emergency hospital should be open and able to help your kitty. In order to help pay for the care he may need, you can apply for care credit, which is a low interest credit card that can be used towards veterinary care.

http://www.carecredit.com/

You can also check out the following website for more information on financial assistance.

http://www.speakingforspot.com/helppayingforveterinarycare.html

Please try to have your kitty seen ASAP and let me know if I can be of further assistance.
