Question

i have a cat that while usually good tempered has attacked some people recently he has been nutered. he is an indoor cat and the only time he has attacked anyone is if he had gotten outside and been brought back in. he always waits and ambushes them. are there any reasons why he might be doing that.

Info Request

Hi,

When you say your cat will wait and ambush someone, do you mean while he is outside and you're trying to capture him to get him back indoors, or once he's back inside, he does this?

He is neutered, but has he recently been neutered or has he attacked people recently, it was a little hard to tell, the way you wrote it.

Is your cat eating, drinking, eliminating and playing as usual?

Thanks for all your additional detail.

Accepted Answer

Hi again, and thanks for your additional information.

Try your best to not let him escape, outside. This is a natural instinct in many cats, especially those who had not been neutered from an early age. If every household member makes a habit of blocking the doorway when they are leaving or entering, and knowing the location of your cat, before they open the door, this will help prevent his escapes. The testosterone in his system should be diminishing at this time, and hopefully, that will lessen his urge to get outside.

When you bring him in, put him directly in a room designated for him, with food/water, litter, sleeping area (cat bed, etc.) scratching post, and some toys. Let him settle down for a while, and then go into the room with some healthy cat treats, offer them to him, pet him, speak to him gently, and let him out to enjoy his freedom of the whole house again. If he attacks anyone, put him back in the room for five minutes, then let him out. If you are consistent with this behavior modification, you should see an improvement.
