Answer

hello!
Pin #9 (orange with black tracer wire) of the data link connector is the one that should have battery power.     Battery power for this connector cones from the 10 amp "room lamp" fuse.   This circuit also powers up the clock, trunk lamp, courtesy lights, and instrument cluster so if these accessories are working the power problem is not at the fuse.
if tehse other accessories are working, you may need to start opening teh harness from the data link back towards teh fuse block to look for a break in the wire or a corroded harness splice.

thanks i just bought the car and i just noticed the after market stereo only powers up when i turn on the headlights could this be related?

Accepted Answer

Possibly, but I am afraid i cannot answer any questions you might ahve about that.   The wiring for the stereo that someone added after teh car was built will not be shown in any of the service manuals, and it is obviously wired incorrectly.    You may want to start your wire tracing in that area, or remove the add-on wiring before doing anything else.
Electrical wiring in a vehicle very rarely fails by itself; when there is an electrical problem it is usually located in the last place that someone worked on it...
