Question

My 993 (1995) occasionally has a slight hesitation when starting from a cold start if I depress the accelerator too fast when upshifting. It will also backfire through the airbox if I really depress it fast. This lasts for about two miles, then it settles down with no further problems. Could this be weather related?

Accepted Answer

Hi,
That sounds like a sticking lifter, that will give you the hesitation and the popping.
An exaust valve lifter will make it pop through the air box.

Did you put a thick oil or oil additive in, your oil will be thick on cold start and if you
have a bad lifter, when the oil is warmer it is not as thick and will get to the lifter
more easily.

I would have the lifters checked before starting the engine when cold to see it that is
the problem.
