Question

I have a Toshiba Satellite A55-S306. I can't get it to start up. I keep getting a notice that Windows did not start succesfully. I have tried, with no luck, using the Toshiba Back Up CD and the Toshiba CD. Any suggestions?

XP is the operating system.

I have tried Safe Mode and the other options that were presented. (i.e. manuel input, return to last setting)

The computer has a lot of material stored on the hard drive. It became increasingly slower and I had seveal incidence when this problem occured but was able to get it working after shuting the computer down for seveal hours. It has now reached the point where nothing seems to work. When I insert the recovery disc and press F1 I get an error message message printed in white with a black screen.

Can you tell me what the error message says?

I just realized that the recovery disc I have been using is probably for a previous Toshiba satellite that I owned. (The Toshiba 305/315 series). When I have used the recovery disc and the error work comes it reads as follows.

"START UP: error"

Under that there are many XXX's.

I finally deciphyer that the XXX's spell out "WRONG MACHINE!"

I do not have a recovery disc for the present machine.

OK...a recovery disc usually restores to default...you want to try to salvage what you have on, right?

Accepted Answer

Hi !!

Your Windows XP system files seems to have been corrupted. This can happen because of software issue (mostly) and can also be a problem with hard drive (rarely).

We can first try to repair XP. For this we will need a XP Installation disc (not recovery disc). You will not loose any data.

Here are instruction to perform repair of XP. If they do not work than you will have to do a clean installation using same disc or using a recovery disc from computer manufacturer.

Use this link for reference - take a look to get familiar with process :

http://pcsupport.about.com/od/operatingsystems/ss/instxprepair1.htm

Please follow steps as below :

1. Put the Windows Disk into your drive and restart your computer. Keep pressing F12 [or F10 / etc to choose the boot source] when it starts and choose the CD drive as the boot device when asked. If you are not able to do this then do this : Restart computer and on startup screen it will mention a Key to enter setup. Press that key immediately to enter setup. Then you will find many tabs. Goto BOOT tab. Change the boot order to make the CD Drive as 1st device in Boot order list and then restart computer making sure disc is already in CD Drive.

2. Then it will prompt you to press enter to boot from CD and and allow the installer to load.

3. Then after the installer has loaded it should give you "Welcome to Setup" screen with following options:

To setup Windows XP now, press ENTER.
To repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery Console, press R.
To quit Setup without installing Windows XP, press F3.

Here, Press Enter [to setup Windows XP]

4. Then you will have to press F8 to agree to the licence agreement.

5. Then next screen you will be asked to press enter to setup windows or R to repair, Please press R.

[ If Repair is not one of the options, END setup ]

6. Now, Do not press any key to boot from CD when the mesage appreas. Now it will look like it is installing Windows, but it will do comparison of files on your machine against the ones on the CD and then replace any damaged files with the original.

This should hopefully repair your windows and also you should not loose any files documents etc.
