There's no way that's a drive error, if it was it wouldn't get that far....
It's a driver error, it even tells you !
Some times the driver gets corrupted and gives out that error.
As for data, just plug the drive in and it will be recognized as a second drive.
Have you tried to boot off of the old drive?

Ok, can you boot from the new drive without error?
If you can, I recommend something like this:

Then you can plug the old drive into your computer as a second drive, and retrieve the data you need.
