Question

I had a friend whose computer came up with the following error message.
driver_irql_not_less_or_equal. We took the compter to best buy and they said the hard drive was bad and I ordered a new sata hd. It also came up with a blue screen error message that you correctly determined was ram and not the hard drive. Do you think the first drive is bad after seeing the error message? If not how can I get it and more importantly, the data recovered?

Hi XXX.XXXXXXXX. Thank you for asking your question on JustAnswer.

There's no way that's a drive error, if it was it wouldn't get that far....

It's a driver error, it even tells you !

Some times the driver gets corrupted and gives out that error.

As for data, just plug the drive in and it will be recognized as a second drive.

Have you tried to boot off of the old drive?

Ok, can you boot from the new drive without error?

If you can, I recommend something like this:

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2703735&CatId=2778

Then you can plug the old drive into your computer as a second drive, and retrieve the data you need.
