Question

My 4 year old female toy poodle began vomiting last night and continued throughout the night along with loose stool. Today she has progressed fom loose stool to uncontrollable diarreah and the diarreah now shows blood in it. She eats the same food without change (iams) and has not had any life changes. I don't think she has gotten into anything she shouldn't have other than chewing up a pair of socks. She's listless, her eyes are droopy and she isn't interested in water. When i came in the house from a short time away she met me at the door and barked to be petted, but then goes right back to being listless. I removed food early this morning. She is due for all of her immunizations and check-ups this month. She is spayed. Any advice or information for the night would be most helpful.

Answer

I am sorry to hear that your dog is vomiting and having diarrhea.

Here are some common causes for this:

1) She could have pancreatitis, in which case she would need bloodwork from your vet to confirm it, and would likely need hospitalization. Fatty table scraps can cause this, but it can be caused by other things, too.

2) She could have a foreign body obstructing the intestines or stomach, and would need xrays from your vet to diagnose this, and then possible surgery. This could be the socks.

3) She could have gastroenteritis, which is inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract from an unknown cause. This is very common.

4) She could have organ dysfunction, which can be diagnosed with bloodwork, and would be more common in dogs 7 and older.

5) She could have intestinal parasites, which would need to be diagnosed by a fecal sample.

6) She could have parvo, and this would be confirmed by a special test your vet would need to run, but would be less likely in an adult dog that is fully vaccinated.

7) She could have Hemorrhagic Gastroenteritis (HGE), which causes vomiting and very bloody diarrhea. This is diagnosed with a quick blood test by your vet, and typically requires a day or two of hospitalization and then most dogs recover fully.

The best thing for your dog would be to see your veterinarian. In the meantime, however, you can try this. Do not allow access to ANY food or water until tomorrow morning. At that time, if she has not vomited, you may offer a small amount of water. If she holds that down, you may offer a small amount of a bland diet of boiled chicken breast and white rice in a 50/50 mixture. If she holds that down, you may feed this diet in 4-5 small meals throughout the day tomorrow and the following day, and then if all goes well, you may switch back to her regular diet on the 3rd day. If she continues to vomit or have diarrhea, however, you should take her to see your vet, and bring a stool sample with you.

Hope that helps! Best of luck.

Lately she seems to have hyperactive bowel sounds that I especially notice at night but she eats a little late so I just attributed the sounds to normal digestion. Tonight they are extremely hyperactive. Also the stool has progressed from soft, to loose to runny. Color has gone from tan to now dark brown with streaks of blood.Does that make a more narrow possible diagnosis or just too many things to be able to tell without testing? If you think she will be ok for the night I will wait until tomorrow morning and take her to our vet first thing.

Thank you.

That does not narrow it down, unfortunately, without seeing a vet and having a physical exam and some testing. I think she will be fine overnight... just withhold food and water as I suggested, and follow the instructions, and if things do not improve, see your vet.

Best of luck.
