My cat stopped eating yesterday but does drink water. Yesterday, the bowel movement was yellow but solid. It is almost noon and no urination or bowel movement. Moves slight wobbling and spend most time lying. I am assisting feeding. My cat struggles to keep mouth closed. Please advice. Thank you.

My cat is an 18 years old male. He does not meow at the touch or squeezing gently of his abdomen. No, he has not vomitted. He is being quiet and just wants to lay down. Please advice. Thank you.

Answer

In a cat this age, anything could be going on. Kidney disease is most common in older cats. Fever and infection are also possible. If the cat is not eating, his blood sugar will drop and he will get more lethargic. Cats that don't eat get very sick very fast. You can offer onion-free jarred Gerber baby food, chicken or turkey, to stimulate the appetite. If he won't eat it, you need to have your vet run some blood tests to reach a diagnosis. Your vet can also give fluids and vitamins under the skin to flush the kidneys and make the cat feel better. Old cats can go down hill fast, I would have him examined ASAP before things get worse.
