Question

One of my six cats, Tuffy, seems to have a bowel problem. He is over 15 yrs old so I'm not leaning toward sugery. He strains to go and his feces are thin and wormlike. Sometimes diarhea. Subsequently he is now refusing to use the litter boxes which are kept very clean. He goes to the basement and does his business on the landing where we now spread newspaper. We've tried different types of litter and putting a box on the landing to no avail. He is on prednisone and tylan to control the inflamation and diarhea. A big problem for him is gas. Is there anything we can give him to control this as it seems to cause Tuffy great discomfort? Tuffy is a great pet who has seen his fair share of troubles. Eight years ago he suffered from encephalitis. We were told to put him down. We decided to hang in there and had to reteach him how to eat, drink, and evacuate. Very time consuming but, worth the effort. Any insight or advice will be appreciated. Thank you. Cherie

Yes, five years ago when this problem started. Nothing out of the ordinary was seen. Lymphoma was suggested becauce there was significant weight loss initially. Since then his weight has been stable and has even increased a bit. A biopsy was recomended but the cost was thousands of dollars that we did not have

Answer

Have you tried hypoallergenic diets (not mild diets, but novel protein sources)? How about feline specific pancreatic test? An abdominal ultrasound may be more beneficial then another set of x-rays since bowel thickness and overall organ architecture can be observed. Endoscopy is also an option and biopsies can be taken via this method which shouldn't cost thousands (as going in surgically with full thickness biopsies is more expensive, however there is the added benefit of getting a visual of all organs and bowels).

I've tried novel protein diets with no success. Is there anything I can do short term to relieve him of gas? I will definately have an abdominal ultrasound done.

Accepted Answer

I have heard (but never done myself) of simethecone given to cats and dogs with a lot of gas. For a cat I believe you would give a very young child dose (Little Tummys is the name of a child version of gas-x). Still definitely pursue the underlying cause but this may help in the meantime. Has forti-flora been tried?

Answer

Any lower carbohydrate canned diet is also preferable if the sensitive stomach diets and hypoallergenic diets don't make any difference.
