Question

my cat is 1 & a half yrs old & has massive problems. first he was taken to the vet due to blood in his urine which the vet couldnt figure out what the problem was beause of the amount of blood. meds were given, problem cleared up. next he stopped eating for about 4-5 days , we thought it was a toothache so back to the vet! they said he had cat scratch fever and 4 more meds were started. 2 weeks into his meds the vet called and said that test was negative & the problem is his immune system attacking his body. now he wont eat unless i sit w/ him & immidately afterwards he has his "freak-outs"! he cries, yells, contorts his body all around, paws at his face and diahrea's where he's standing! he'll pee in his box but the last 4 nights he pooh's on my floor before, during or after his freak out! we are fed up with our vet & at a loss of what to do for our little guy. if it is his immune system am i being selfish by prolonging this painful life? please help

Hi Denise--

Based on all of the issues your kitty is having and the different test data & medication info you've provided, I think one of our cat veterinary experts should be helping you. If you have no objection, I will opt out and send this to one of them? Is that okay?

Hello Denise,
Here's the problem. Someone needs to differentiate, and quickly, if the bleeding observe in the bladder was due to a urinary tract infection, feline lower urinary tract disease (FLUTD - which is an inflammatory condition) or if it is an autoimmune problem. Autoimmune disease is where the body attacks itself. If that is the case, the treatment plan is VERY DIFFERENT from antibiotics. In fact, the treatment is aggressive use of steroids to suppress the immune system while the body recovers.

At this point, I would strongly urge you to get a DEFINITIVE answer by asking for a referral to an internal medicine specialist. Your vet should be able to quickly arrange this for you. It is really necessary since the diagnosis is questionable, and if your vet truly believes it is autoimmune disease, they need to be more aggressive with the steroids.

Definitely, worth the consult, at least, with a internal medicine specialist.

Good Luck
Dr. Andy
