Question

My daughter's puppies have just survived parvo in July. However they are coming down to our home to visit for the weekend.

I have a 2 1/2 year old pit bull and a 6 year old Mixed lab dog. What are the chances of them getting parvo? and how should we handle this?

Answer

If your dogs are vaccinated against parvo they should not get it even if exposed as their immune systems should just kill the virus off as the vaccine 'trained' it to do.

You can read here about parvo

http://marvistavet.com/html/canine_parvovirus.html

the section on caring for the recovered pups states that they are to be considered contagious for a month after recovering.

Make sure to clean up stools which is always a good policy to avoid spread of germs or intestinal parasites.

Hope this helps you!

Ok, I am not sure if they were vaccinated, once I get them vaccinated, how long before they are ok to be around these pups?

Answer

Usually two weeks is the time figured for immunity to be kicking in from a vaccine.

You can call your vet if they usually do your shots and check to see.

Parvo is typically one of the vaccines included in the annual shots.
