Question

We have a 2.5 yr old rat who was operated for two tumors/cancers less than a month ago. One was located on the throat, round and not attached, it partially grew around one side of the thyroid (this part had to be removed; no obvious problems have arisen due to this partial removal). The other growth was less movable and positioned on one thigh muscle. During surgery, some liquid came out. One or 2 weeks following the surgery, both grows have returned. Another surgery is probably doing not much better.   I apply an ointment with various herbs etc. in the hopes to slow progression. The rat was bred for research purposes and would be esp. susceptible to bladder cancer (no signs of this in either this rat nor its siblings are visible, though some females have developed vaginal bleeding before death)
What treatment would you suggest for the regrowth? Thank you very much, Heidi

I think you should have a quite detailed description already. Please let me know if it is gone and I re-write it.

What happened after the surgery: cancer came back within 10 days even faster and stronger larger than before. Artemisinin, fewer carbs in diet, more fat and protein. Flax and salmon oil in raw yogurt.

Answer

Hello Heidi,

I'm sorry to hear that you and your rat are going through this. Since the two tumors were on widely-separated body parts, there's a good possibility the cancer has spread. If you want to see a veterinary oncologist, chemotherapy or radiation may be an option. If you'll give me your state, I'll try to locate an oncologist for you.

It sounds like you're interested in alternative treatments, too, and you've done a good job of finding some of the better ones. Whole books have been written about alternative cancer treatments for dogs, so much of the information out there is for that species. However, the advice can eb adapted for rats as well. Both conventional and holistic treatments seldom offer a complete cure (though it isn't unheard of), but instead slow the cancer's progress. Integrative treatment involves the best of both conventional and alternative. I believe people get the best results that way. Dr Roger Clemmons, DVM, at the University of Florida is a leading expert on integrative veterinary medicine. I would recommend that you read his article, which includes recommendations for vitamins, herbs, and other supplements. You can read it here:

http://neuro.vetmed.ufl.edu/neuro/AltMed/Cancer/Cancer_AltMed.htm

You mentioned flax oil, so I believe you may have heard something about Dr. Joanna Budwig's cancer diet. The recipe is:

1 cup Organic low fat cottage cheese
      2-5 Tbsp. of flaxseed oil
enough water to make it soft

You put it all in the blender. It is to be fed daily. Here is a link to Dr. Budwig's site:

There are also mushroom extracts that have shown some promise. If you'd like more on that, let me know. If you have more questions, want more information on certain aspects, or help finding an oncologist, just click on REPLY. I hope your rat's cancer isn't too advanced to respond to treatments.

Dear Anna,

thank you!

I'd appreciate it if you could give me the name of an oncologist who is experienced in treating rats in the San Diego area.

Also, what mushroom preparations would you recommend? I have some human supplements with a mixture of mushroom extracts. I shoudl try this.

Are there any topical treatments can you recommend? It may be easier to reach the cancer wihout overloading the entire body with a mixture of sometimes unpleasant tastes (mushrooms are bitter).

Thank you! I try to press accept after reply an dhope this works. If not, I'll accept later. Here is one of my email addresses in case we'd get disconnected: XXXXX@XXXXXX.XXX

Thank you!
Heidi

Thank you for waiting. It isn't possible to find an oncologist who has experience with rats in an online directory - they are simply listed as veterinary oncologists. You could call and ask about experience with rats, but the truth is that very few people bother to treat their pet rats for cancer. They just euthanize them. You're an exceptionally devoted rat owner. This link will take you to the site of a respected oncologist in San Diego:

http://www.vshsd.com/Specialties-Oncology/

You can read all about her and her clinic, and contact information is listed. If for some reason, this vet doesn't work out, let me know and I'll find others.

As for topicals, I can't truly recommend one because i have no personal experience with them. there is one called blacksalve that many people claim to have gotten good results with. It has been featured in some alternative animal care magazines. Here's a link to their site:

http://blacksalveinfo.com/

As for mushroom extracts, I recommend the following company. I've used their products for years. If you call them (contact info on the site) and tell them what you need, they'll help you figure out the best product to use.

I hope this helps. If you need anything else, don't hesitate to ask. I'll be hoping for a positive outcome for your rat.

Dear Anna,

Thank you, I just send this brief reply to you and will need to login to accept your answer (thank you!).

I have seen blacksalve applied to rats - the pictures were horrible. In the end the animal bled to death. In a provate message this rat owner told me to never use the salve on rats.

I tried the slave myself just to see how it hurt. It hurt terribly and made a terrible scar.... Although some vets apply the salve, I think lay people shoudl never do it on their own.

Just sharing this with you. Thank you fro all your help.
Best regards,
Heidi

Answer

Thank you for the information on the blacksalve. It's always good to hear from someone with firsthand experience. When I've read about it being used on dogs and cats, the photos always looked horrible, but the people claim to have gotten good results in the end. I appreciate knowing a little more about it. I'm afraid I've never heard of any other topicals, except bloodroot salve, and I haven't even read of good results with that.

There's no need to click on accept again. Thank you for accepting above.

I hope the oncologist will be able to help your rat.
