Question

What can I do about unsolicited mail. Some one without my authorization is supplying my name and address to charity and religious raffle organization who in turn are mailing me raffle tickets with instructions to sell or buy them myself. I have had no contact with these organizations before. My requests for the source of my name and address have been refused repeatedly. What can I do and where should I start?

Accepted Answer

Dear XXXXXXXX,

There are three major sources of information that is sold to vendors for advertising and marketing purposes.

1. Credit Reporting agencies

2. Some states driver license departments

3.. Businesses with whom you have made cataglogue or on line purchases.

The fist step is to use the following website to opt out from all pre-screening marketing campaigns.

the second step is to write a letter to each company you receive information from, askign them how they got your address. Let them know that according to federal law they are required to inform you if asked.

Once you find out who gave your contact information, then you can send them a letter to opt out, or cease and desist.

Then report each of them to the FTC. The FTC does not resolve the issue for you, but it does track the complaints and if abuses arise later, they will take action.

You will not be able to stop unsolicited mail 100%. But you can reduce it greatly.

Make sure when you make catelogue or on line purchases, you include a comment indicating that you do not authorize sharing your name and contact information. You can also send a formal opt out letter to each of those organizations with whom you have done business.
