Question

When I got my oil changed the guy brought me a ball bearing. He said It fell out of the drain plug.MY engine is rattling.i got the chain tensioner and guides replaced.Timming chains were not worn out. Where did the ball bearing come from.It is rattling on the timming cover side of the engine. Now it sounds worse than before I had it worked on. Did it come off one of the cams and fell down to the oil pan.

Answer

Hello and thank you for using JustAnswer.com

That ball is most likely from the old timing chain tensioner or the current one. If you had timing chain work done, I would take it right back to them. Be careful driving the car since we are unsure if this is from the current timing chain tensioner or the last one. Most likely there is a spring still in there somewhere also.

If you have any more questions on this, please feel free to ask Thanks Jay!

Would the ball come from the intake cam on the other end from timming chains. Would this ball not allow oil pressure to build up and timming chain is flopping around inside the cover.

On the timing chain tensioners, there is the plunger and a ball and spring. This ball that cam out, if you took a pen and laid it down, it is almost the same size round as the pen, correct? it may be a hair smaller, I am trying to guess the size.

Answer

Well, like I said, there is a ball in the timing chain tensioner. We just don't know if it's from the new one, or from the old one. Who is to say they tightened it properly, it could have come loose and shot the tensioner apart. If you are hearing noise from the timing chain area now, I would bring it right back to who did you timing chain work and have them correct it.

If you have any more questions on this, please feel free to ask Thanks Jay!

Take away the ball bearing and tensioner issue. What else could it be?

Could it be

bad rod bearing's

wrong gas octane

exhaust sheilding

ac clutch slipping

oil pump not pumping enough pressure

Accepted Answer

I actually got a assist from another expert. The only other ball it could be is the oil filter check ball. There is no other balls in this engine. But if you have a noise from the front of the engine, I would think it's timing chain related, es specially since it came from the pan.

Thanks Jay!
