Question
I have a Down East 41' sailboat. I got a jib sheet wrapped in the prop/shaft and now, with all of the line cut away, the shaft does not speed up in forward (it shifts into gear, but when the engine revs, the shaft speed remains the same - everything is normal in reverse). When the line was wrapped in the shaft the shaft looked like it was pulled aft and would not spin in either forward or reverse (that's how we knew the line was caught). Is it something simple or have I caused major damage?

Hello. That sounds like something may have been damaged in the transmission - you should have it evaluated by a qualified marine mechanic. Don't attempt to turn the shaft of put it in gear, because right now you could do further damage. If the line was wrapped tight enough to move the shaft, it may have pulled an internal component, and you will also want to have your cutlass bearing and stuffing box checked along with the shaft alignment.
