Question

I have a mid 80's 70 horse 3-cylinder Evinrude boat motor. I started to get a alarm going off
in my shifter area.I checked the oil tank and it was getting low. I added a quqrt of oil and it started to make the noise again. It died and restarted. I only drove a little while and shut off.It starts right up now. If I pumped the oil bulb it went out. I was told the VRO is failing per a conversation with a local repair facility over the phone. As far as I can see and hear I did no damage to the motor. I asked them If I could just mix 50:1 in the tank and disconnect the warning buzzer and I was told no!!! They said it pumps fuel and oil and this could not be done, that I would have to replace fuel pump to do it.I thought since that fuel is being pumped that it would be ok to mix fuel and oil and it would work. Unemployed and prime time salmon fishing is now---- What can I do???

Answer

Is the alarm constant or intermittant? if constant its indicating an overheat problem. If intermittant then its an oil warning and yes you can premix the oil in the fuel and run with it if the fuel is still being pumped.

The sound was interm. at slow speeds. It came on constant once and died. It started back up and ran. I stopped running it and used trolling motor for a while. when restarted later ran for a while at slow speed with no noise and I made it back to dock. It sounded a little different in the end , but I made it. I started it this morning and it sounded fine- I pulled the plugs and checked for debris of any kind and there was none.I hope I did no damage.!! I will pre-mix the rest of the fuel and retry it. Should I mix it a little richer for the first tank?? I'm not sure why the repair facility said it could not be done, except times are very slow in Michigan. I also was told that the alarm will continue to go off If fuel is mixed. Do I have to cut the wires to the oil reservoir and twist together to eliminate this or will it not come back on, or will just cutting the 2 wires eliminate it???Should I leave the oil tank still hooked up in case it starts up again or no?? The noise is too anoying.

Hi XXXXXX,
No need to chop any wires,It sounds more like you have a faulty sensor on the overheat side of things, if the alarm keeps sounding disconnect he brown/tan wire this will cut out the alarm,
You need to be a little cautious when adding oil to the fuel and keeping the oil system connected, the reason being is that you will be putting double oil through the system which can do damage as it causes a weak fuel mix which can cause piston damage. I would disconnect the main oil line into the engine leave about 3" protruding and use a suitable sized bolt and jubilee clip to block the line off, then add 50:1 oil straight to the tank. But again you need to ascertain that the engine is not actually overheating, when the engine is running put your hand on the cylinder head(use caution there are moving parts that are not forgiving) it should be just about bearable heat and not so hot that it will scald, can be worth splashing droplets of water on the head if they bubble and boil its way too hot.
