Question

One side of my English Bulldogs face was swollen when we woke up this morning. We immediately gave him one benadryl. Now he seems to have hives on the insides of his legs and on the underbelly. Any suggestions? Thank You for your time.

Hello,

Usually the chewable Benedryl is only 12.5 mgs. The normal dosage for Benedryl for dogs is 1-2 mgs per pound of body weight every 6-8 hours. At 60 pounds you way underdosed your boy he can safely take 3/ 25mg Benedryl to help with the rash and swelling. You can also bathe the dog in some blue dawn dish soap and follow with an Oatmeal Colloidal bath. to help with the itching and rash. Allergens can be inhaled, ingested or contact allergies. You may have to try ruling out what may have caused this problem. I do suggest a follow up with your Vet in the am. This should help your boy to feel more comfortable until morning. Joan
