Question

I inherited a home safe but can't find the four-digit combination. It is probably 40-50 yrs old (my uncle who owned it would be 90 years old now), about 14"x16" in size, very heavy and the bolt is in the locked position but the door is open. Can a locksmith (do I need a specialist?) determine the combo from the open safe or change/reset the combo to a new number, or in any other way get a combo for the safe?

Is there any advantage to having the door open to helping determine the combination or does it have to cracked either way?

Accepted Answer

The door being open is a huge advantage for a locksmith. A locksmith will be able to disassemble the dial assembly and reset it to a new combination. Most likely due to the age the company that made the safe is no longer in business or no longer has records of this particular safe to help the locksmith get it unlocked. Also it could end up that the existing dial assembly will have to be "knocked out" and replaced with new locking and dial parts. There is no question you will need professional assistance to resolve this.
