Question

Hi, I have an 8 year old female Basset Hound who I believe might have an internal parasite infection. She has had a re-occurring diarrhea issue for the past month, skin rash/scratching, and a one time vomiting episode this past week. Doing my own research, I had thought she had Chronitc Gastritis brought on by food allergies. A charcoal based bath seems to have eleviated the rash. The vet wanted to put her on benedryl and anti-diarrheal regimen as a first approach.   Starting yesterday thru midday today, she stopped eating and drinking. Then, late midday, she wanted to eat again and drink. I gave her a very bland and small diet of plain crackers, low sodium chicken broth, sweet potato and a little salmon.   She pooped about an hour later. There was traces of pink and red in the stool. After 10 minutes, I noticed movement in the stool and possibly something whitish there. I'm thinking hookworm or tapeworm that's caused some bleeding?

Possible allergy approach of benedryl and anti-diarhreal meds. However, if this is parasidic in nature, these are pointless.

Hello again, XXXXXXXXX.

From your description, it is possible that your dog does have an intestinal parasitic infection with either tapeworms, whipworms, hookworms, or other 'non-worm' parasites called giardia and coccidia. If what you saw, looked like tiny white things moving, similar to the size of a grain of uncooked rice, this would be tapeworms.

Blood in the stool can have various causes; intestinal parasites are one, food allergies are another, and you can read more about this symptom, here:

It would be a good idea to have your vet analyze a fecal sample to determine if there are any intestinal parasites.

I hope all will be well with your dog.
