Question

My cat is a 5 year old male Himalayan, about 8 pounds. I was on vacation for 3 days, when I got back my cat was acting lethargic and one eye was gooey. I have a second cat, but she's fine. We're stumped as to what caused this, I don't know of anything that changed.

He's become extremely finicky in his eating. He won't eat his regular food (Newman's own organic dry). At first I gave him canned food which he ate readily. Now he's acting finicky about that. He seems to only like cat treats "All natural temptations", crunchy tidbits. He drinks water okay it seems. He'll pause in front of the water before drinking quite a bit, also before he goes to the litter box he pauses. I've been giving him echinacea/goldenseal herbal pills, and L-lysine as recommended online. Also half a tablet of Chlor-Trimeton allergy meds and terramycin to help the eye infection. So far that's helped the eye a lot. He still acts lethargic. Any thoughts?

Hi,

I'm concerned about your cat's pausing before drinking, then drinking quite a bit, and also pausing before using the litterbox. These may be symptoms of a urinary tract infection, bladder or kidney issue, and this may also be adversely affecting his appetite.

If you feel he's drinking more than usual, this could be a symptom of toxic ingestion, diabetes, kidney disease, hyperthyroidism, or other medical conditions, so it would be a good idea to have him evaluated by his vet, as soon as possible for diagnosis and treatment.

I recommend stopping the Echinacea and Goldenseal, for the moment, until it is determined what's causing his symptoms.

I'm glad the Terramycin is helping with the eye infection. You can also place a cool, damp, wrung out regular teabag (not herbal) on the closed eye, for a few seconds/minutes at a time as he'll allow, to help draw out infection.

I hope you are able to have him evaluated in person by the vet, to find the causes of his symptoms and have him treated, if necessary.
