Question

My cat has an enlarged spleen with some apparent nodules on it, as verified by ultrasound, the vet says it may be a cancer. I have read several articals online about splenic cancers and am now very worried for her. We took her in because she was having problems 2-3 tmes a week vomiting her food. As a math/science guy myself, and understanding that there are several other possible causes, I would like to know the odds that there would be some other cause for the symptoms. I have scheduled her for surgery on Tuesday. Am I likely to loose her from this ailment or is there a good chance that she will live a long life?

Optional Information

Type of Animal: Black Cat
Gender: female spayed
Age: 4-5 years old

Already Tried:
Initially the vet thought it might be a blockage in her intestines. She wasn't deficatating much and was vomiting a few times a week. We fed her a "special diet" for a week and she seemed to get better. Now, a few weeks later they called and said that it was more probably an enlarged spleen. We took her for an ultrasound and a second opinion elsewhere. Now she is scheduled for exploratory surgery.

Accepted Answer

Hi there.

It is unlikely that the spleen issue would be causing the vomiting unless there is some metastasis of the mass on her spleen. In my experience, these masses on the spleen are hemaniomas that are benign and removal of the spleen is curative. there is a small percentage of these masses that will be malignant cancers but this is very minor.

You will only know once the spleen is removed and biopsied. I can tell you, though, there is a very good chance your gal will be around for a very long time after this procedure.

Good Luck!!
