Question

I dont know how this happened, we are VERY careful...(dogs have appt to be spayed in oct),
my 6# chihuahua is pregnant (probaly about 6-8 weeks) by my 11# dachshund. How difficult will it be for her to deliver the pups? He had gotten our 8# jrt a couple of years ago and she did fine with her 2 pups. She is, of course, a much sturdier built dog. My chihuahua was very attentive with thoese pups, so I am sure she will be a good mom, but I do not want anything to happen to her. Is there too much of a size difference? He is 5yo, she is 4yo.

Hi XXXXXXXXXXX~

Unfortunately, Chihuahuas in general seem to have a hard time delivering pups..and with the fact that she was bred by a bigger dog could absolutely cause the pups to be too big for her to deliver the old fashioned way.

The only thing you're going to be able to do is to keep your eyes open for when she goes into labor, and at the very first sign of trouble (straining, no pup after an hour or two of active labor, ect.), you'll have to get her in to the vet for an emergency c-section.

Maybe she'll get lucky and the pups will have small Doxie heads, but you should be prepared for the possibility of her needing surgery to deliver the pups.

I hope this helps.

Answer

That would be something you'd have to discuss with your own vet. Some vets won't spay a pregnant bitch, but some will. I'd give your vet a call in the morning and discuss it with them.
