Question

My wife's 2003 Volvo S-60 has begun stalling when the air conditioner is on and she comes to a quick slow down or stopp. The car is well maintained but has 146,000 miles on it.

What are possible causes? It is and has been a great car and she still enjoys driving it.

Answer

Hi there there could be a few thing wrong at this time with this concern. First the a/c compressor may be bad and have internal bearing problems when it kicks on it could be to much of a drag on the car, since the a/c comp on that car is at the bottom it is hard to get to but you can reach down there and try to spin the inside of the a/c comp and see if it is froze, also if you could have a faulty mass air flow sensor reading the incorrect and when the load comes on it could not be compasating for this. but othere than that the car idels and runs good untill the a/c is on, correct

It runs fine down the highway and performs well. The ac works fine, it is just that she turns it off when she knows she is slowing down or in traffic to prvent the car from stalling. As far as the ac- no problem, just the only thing she can turn off to keep it from stalling.

Accepted Answer

Ok this could be caused from either a slight air leak or on that car the very first thing I would check is it has a electronic throattle what means there is no cable and this is how it compinsates to raise the idle I do see this alot what happens when there is dirt and carbon on the throattle it prevents it from being able to move correctly. the throattle is located under the intake.
