Question

12 yr old basset hound

limping after being outside worried about snake bites
panting pretty hard can yuo tell if its a snake bite or not by looking...
about an hour or 2 ago...
should i take her in?
if you can see a snake bite, and i dont
its in her left leg can i give her advil or something til vet on monday in case of sprain?

What type of snakes do you have in your area?

Do you notice any swelling or blood on the leg?

Answer

Because there are copperheads in your area, and because of the edema (swelling) and dyspnea (difficulty breathing), I think the absolute best thing to do is to have her seen by an emergency vet as soon as possible.

 

Hopefully they'll just find a sprain or something, but in cases of snakebite, it's always better to be safe than sorry.

i might have explained it wrong while walking she is panting , but now she is calm and resting and her breathing is regular, getting her calm was what was frightening....do you still think i should, i dont see any bite marks.....how long before she would be showing major signs of the snake bite? its been anywhere within 3 hours already she was outside since she

If it is a snakebite, it could be up to 24 hours before you see any symptoms...I think if it were my dog, I'd err on the side of caution and have her seen.
