Question

Hello, a cat came to our house 2 days ago and is very emaciated. He is eating and seems alert, he is not totally lethargic, but does tend to sleep quite a bit. The poor thing looks pitiful but my nine year old son has really been moved and has been helping me to take care of him. We have dogs and I know absolutely nothing about cats. The cat was covered (by covered, I mean just about every inch of him) by flea eggs and other crawly things. I immediatly went to the pet store and bought feline advantix, at the risk of making him even sicker I treated him because he was absolutely miserable. Today he is not scratching incessently. We have been feeding him high protein moist food but I did let him drink milk to his heart's content last night. (I didn't realize that was not good until I was reading a post) Today he had diahrrea. I am worried about parvo? Worms? Feline leukemia. There is a little moisture around his eyes and nose but not much. I can't get him to the vet until Mon.

Thanks for the information. Being a feral cat, there are many things that could be causing the emaciation. It could just be undernutrition or malnutrition, but intestinal worms and other intestinal parasites are very likely as well. The fleas may be causing a severe anemia or transmitted an organism called hemobartonella that is causing anemia. Fleas can also transmit Bartonellosis (cause of cat scratch fever). The moisture around the eyes and nose can be an upper respiratory infection. Feline parvo is possible, but not the first thing I would look for. It is not like parvo in dogs. Feline Leukemia and Feline AIDS is definitely possible. There is not much you can really do besides feed him until you can get him to your vet. I would limit interaction with him as much as possible until then. Especially true with your son. Intestinal worms, ringworm and bartonellosis are the biggest worries for transmission to humans. Please let me know if you have any other questions. Hope this helps.
