if the fan on my outside a/c unit stops working will that hurt anything else

Yes it will make the head pressure on compressor go real high and may trip the high discharge safety if your unit has one other wise it could go extremely high without you knowing about it and sometimes causes rupturing of some part of high side piping.

i can not see anything else wrong can i just change the fan

Check the capacitor first see if its bulging or corroded it will be inside unit electrical panel right where high voltage enters please pull disconnect first

Yes but always change the capacitor too along with new motor These can items can be bought at a Graingers
