Question

My Sears Garage Door Opener Model XXX-XXXXXX suddenly stopped working. At first, I heard the usual "click" but the motor made a humming sound instead of moving the door. I removed the cover and gave the pulley a shove and the motor kicked on and closed the door. Now all it makes is a single "click" when I push the button to open it. Is this the symptom of a bad motor or something else?

Answer

Thank you for using Just Answer!

If you just heard the hum of the motor then this is a symptom that the motor start capacitor has gone bad. This can be replaced without tearing the unit apart and replacing the motor. It is not uncommon for a motor capacitor to go bad as a door gets older. Consult your owners manual for replacement parts or they can be purchased at any on line garage door parts site.

Hey Jay, I only heard the hum of the motor once. The door had opened fine just a few minutes before. It's when I pressed the button to close the door that I heard the hum. Since then, all I hear is a single "click" and no hum at all. What do you think?

Accepted Answer

The motor hum was basically the motor needing a kick start to actually close the door. If the capacitor is blown then it is possible for the motor to make no sound at all. I would recommend replacing this first because it is approx. a 15.00 part and is a common cause of motor problems on garage door openers.
