Mechanic who says not worth the money because there is no good time frame guarantee on the suggested method for correcting it he says it would need to convert to r134a system which has a lot of disadvantages

Answer
it is possible, but unless the car is in mint condition all the way through, the cost of replacement and converting to R134, which is mandatory, will exceed the value of the vehicle. it can cost 2000 to 3000 dollars for the entire service to be done. if you are replacing an individual component like the AC compressor, drier or condensor, then it is worth doing, and the cost will be arouund 500 to 700 dollars. if you need more info let me know...

the other mechanic said that due to the age of the system and that the car sat for 5 years before a recent replacement of the engine individual component replacement was not recommended or possible. Also, you are saying he is correct in that it must be converted to the r134 and do you feel this system does have a lot of disadvantages as he states?
Accepted Answer
the system does not have that many disadvantages, it operates the same as the old system, and yes you would have to go to the new 134a, the disadvantages of the new system are the AC clutch drive, your gas mieage will go down a bit, the condensor and drier will have to be added, along with a thermostatically controlled switch that splices into your wiring harness, and the new 134a system, when swapped to an older vehicle, tends to not put out the required amount of cold air, the older components in the vehicle like the fan just were never made for this application, and you will also notice it being muggy in the car as the pump will not spin to the required rpms and move the refrigernat fast enough. ut 134 is cleaner, not harmfull, lasts longer and is easier and cheaper to service. you can still find the pieces for the old R12 system and have it installed and get it working, it is not impossible, just getting harder to find the parts. and before doing that, you need to locate R12 refrigerant, you cant purchase it, but the shop that does the AC work can. it comes down to alot of shops just not wanting to do R12 work anymore, and alot have stopped and only do r134a now. you may have no choice if no one in the area will work on or service r12 systems.
