Question

my child is only 5 years old and last night at bedtime she was upset because she had a priveledge taken away for bad behavior. She said" I wish I had a gun so I could kill myself." We were beside ourselves. We don't even own any guns and never talk this way. We try to be the most loving parents and give her so much attention. She doesn't watch any tv that she could have heard this from. She did start kindergarten 3 days ago? Is she dealing with depression? Should we seek a counselor for her?

Hi and welcome to just answer,

First let me reassure you that this is most likely an isolated statement made out of frustration at losing her "right" to something. As to where it came from, I would guess school, the playgound, maybe on tv even if it wasn't yours, you never know what children hear and pick up but they do and kindergarten is a place they learn more than reading, writing and arithmetic! It's where they are socialized and hear things they never were exposed to before, especially from those with older siblings.
What did you respond to her when she made the comment? I don't believe she needs a counselor because of this one incident, what she needs is to be taught how to respond when she is frustrated that is acceptable. I would suggest keeping an eye on her and correcting her when she answers inappropriately. Do it simply, calmly...for example: when she said that you could respond....I bet you are frustrated that you can''t have (fill in the blank, privilege) and we can use better words.. She probably is not even aware of the interpretation of what she said. I would not make more out of this right now. I hope this helps.
I am available for follow-up if needed.
