Question

I have a 7 month old puppy that had whip worms. She finished the medication but continues to go to the bathroom (#2 explosions) in the house and her crate. She also rarely urinates- only 5 times since we got her 2 weeks ago.

We took her to the vet but the only diagnosis was the whip worms. she drinks water and was on a rice diet for a few days and ate.

Info Request

Where was she acquired?

What was the medication she took for the whip worms?

Is she on heartworm prevention?

Was there improvement on the rice?

What type of food are you feeding her?

How much does she drink in a day?

Is she spayed?

Has she always had the diarrhea?

Did she have a food change then?

Thank you

She was acquired at a breeder in fredericksburg, VA. The only difference with the rice was she actually ate it when I put chicken broth on it. She had her original food- pedigree from the breeder- both wet and dry but would only eat very small amounts. not what I was used to for a young puppy. She does play in small bouts but not for extended time. . we started to gradually add the organic dry food but it was only 3 days before she got really ill. she didn't go to the bathroom- #2 until day 5 and they were loose. The medicine wasPanacur. she drinks maybe 1/4 to 1/2 a c of water a day. she is not spayed. no she is not yet on heartworm prevention

Accepted Answer

It isn't unusual to need 2 treatments of the panacur in bad cases of whip worms and since the whips are likely in your yard she may have reinfected herself as well since she is not on heartworm prevention which also protects against whips. I would suggest asking your vet for a second treatment, get her heartworm tested and start her on heartworm prevention. For now start her on a bland diet of boiled chicken and white rice over the course of a week then over the next week gradually start adding in her regular diet and reducing the bland diet. If this doesn't solve the problem then I would have the stool sent off to the lab for a more detailed analysis. Should these bouts of diarrhea continue then I would be concerned that she either has an inflammatory bowel condition or even food allergies in which case further testing would be needed.

Please let me know if further assistance is needed.
