Question

I have a Yamaha 9.9 4 stroke trolling motor which lost its water pump and became over heated to the point where it quit running before I realized the problem and shut it off. Now it will start, but shuts down after a few minutes running or if the throttle is advanced.
Also I have notice some oil in the water when it is running. Can you tell me what damage the heat has done, and can you advise me whether I should try to have the engine repaired (the nearest dealer is 300 miles away)? Thanks for your time.

there could potentialy be some major damage- blown head gasket, burnt valves, cylinder damage, pistion and ring damage etc. there is quite a few could be's that it would highly advisable to have a professional look at it. It is too difficult to diagnose all the problems that have happened caused by the overheating that the only way to estimate repairs is to have a shop look at it. now depending on whats damaged it might be worth repairing as that motor holds it value very well so weigh the options carefully.
