Question

96 chev 6.5 turbo

will idle fine but when revved throws p0251 code

truck was sitting for 1.5 yrs fule has been drained and replaced.. batteries and starter as well

idles well now no fuel problems

only other problem I noticed is main fuel line has a sweat (rusty) not a major leak so I know its getting some air in there. Obviouisly I will be changing that line tomorrow

My question is could that line affect the injector pump enough to throw that code when teh truck is revved or is the pump truly done? As I said that line has a sweat not a major leak yet.

Answer

Hello!
P0251 by itself, usually indicates a fuel problem. Either ran out of fuel, sucked in air, clogged filter, clogged pickup screen, etc...

P0251 & P??? (any other codes) usually indicate an injection pump failure.

Get the line fixed, put a new filter in if its old and see how it does. If that is the ONLY code stored, I would be inclined to think it is indeed a fuel supply issue like you suspect. Also make sure the lift pump on the drivers side frame-rail is working.

Hope this helps, please let me know of you have additional questions!

several other codes were present when I intially hooked up to it, however I cleared all the codes cam sensor and another I cant remember which and drove the thruck for a bit. within a few min it started to stutter again and engine light came on analyzer beeped and spat out the p0251. I have changed the fuel filter and although originally I did think the fuel was casuing some of the problem after changing all the fuel out and using a good conditioner I think I can rule out that problem.

As I said there is a main fuel line coming down from the tank along the fuel rail and going into a can right under the cab which I assumed was was a filter until I saw electricval lines to it I will assume thats a pump... Anyway that line has a minorish leak so I assume its sucking in air... Iif you let it sit for a while it has problems starting as it is obviously losing its prime..

I guess what Im looking for is confirmation that the injector pump is probably gone as well as that line :P It's been a rather rough 2 days on it. I figure if it was a major leak it woud definitely cause an error... but if any air gets in... can it cause this error?

Accepted Answer

Yes, if air gets in, it can cause that code. If any condition arises that the system is starved for fuel, it can set that code.
Its not common for an injection pump (that I have seen anyway) to only set a P0251. Usually, a minimum of P0251 & P0370 are set for injection pumps.
