Info Request

Hello,

Is he vomiting everything he is eating?

Is he only vomiting after eating or all the time?

Has he had any bones, raw hides or non food items lately?

Any change in his stools?

How lethargic is he?

  • Will he get up for his favorite snack or food?
  • Will he get up to go to the bathroom?
  • Will he get up to investigate if someone knocks on the door?

He's vomited every meal approx 2 hours after eating, not all the time. He then eats the vomit, which seems to stay down. I do not think he has eaten anything out of the ordinary, but he was at the Kennell for 2 days. There could have been something in the yard, but they did not feed him anything unusual. I have not looked for a change in stool, but will next time (Soon) He does get up, and will investigate a knock at the door. He just seems sick, not lethargic to the point he won't move. Any ideas? Should I take him to a animal hospital. I live in the country, approx 1 1/2 hours away from one.

Thanks for your help

Hello,

I know its going to be a long drive, so I don't want to send you out if it isn't serious. The fact that he is vomiting within 2 hours of eating (Most of the time) and he is lethargic I am concerned that he may have a blockage that is causing the problem which while a emergency would not dictate a trip tonight when he can be seen tomorrow.

My biggest concern is that it could be something more serious, the vomiting and lethargic behavior has me concerned. While it could be a blockage or even just a reaction to something he ate there is also the risk that it could be bloat. If he has any of the following symptoms now or at any time before he sees the vet he will need to be taken in at once.

Here is a list of symptoms to watch out for:

  • Whining
  • Inability to get comfortable
  • Pacing or restlessness
  • Pale gums
  • Unproductive attempts to vomit
  • Abnormally rapid breathing
  • Increased heart rate
  • Anxiety
  • Pain, weakness
  • Swelling of the abdomen (particularly the left side)
  •

Otherwise you can monitor this at home and try to make him comfortable. For now I would recommend withholding food for the next 24 hours. When a dog has a upset stomach anything you allow them to eat is going to come right back up, and prolong the upset. He needs time to rest his GI track. I am considered that he may be a little dehydrated so give him unflavored pedialyte to replace the electrolytes he is losing with the vomiting. If you do not have any, in a pinch you can add a pinch of salt and a pinch of sugar to his water to help hydrate him until you can pick up the pedialyte.

I would highly recommend he be seen tomorrow in either case.
