Question

5 year old gelding - PK
My vet has diagnosed 8 degrees of founder - Right hind after treating a lacerated superficial tendon on the left hind,
He proposes cutting the right hind flexor tendon as damage control. My farrier says correction can be made through shoeing.

I'm not sure which way to go.

Optional Information

Type of Animal: Quarter horse
Gender: gelding
Age: 5

My gelding cut his superficial tendon 2 months ago. He was cared for at my vets friends barn. I was completely capable of caring for this wound but had taken him up on his offer for care in exchange for the use of one of my other horses for the summer.
He called yesterday and said that my gelding had foundered on the supporting hind. He decribed the rotation as 8 degrees. He proposes cutting the flexor tendon as damage control. My farrier says corrective shoing is an alternative. My vet has offered to cut the tendon at no charge.

Accepted Answer

Hi XXXX,

Supporting limb laminitis is fairly common in these types of injuries unfortunately. The vet's recommendation may be a little premature as I would tend to agree with the farrier that most times these cases can be managed successfully with shoeing and pads. Without seeing the radiographs and being familiar with the horse's condition, this is my opinion only. Cutting the DDFT is a end stage treatment for chronic or very severe (>15 degrees of rotation) cases. I would give the horse the best shot and go with the farrier initially.

Hope this helps. Cheers
