Optional Information

State/Country relating to Question: Michigan

Accepted Answer

In Michigan, your employer must pay you your last paycheck on the next regularly scheuled payday if you quit a job. For example, if you quit on Friday and you are due to be paid for that week and your next scheduled payday is Thursday, then you should receive your last paycheck on the Thursday for the previous week. You should contact your employer first and if they refuse to give it to you, you can file a complaint with the Michigan Department of Labor.

Also, they cannot withhold your last paycheck or take deductions from your last paycheck for things that they claim you owe to them. The only deductions they are permitted to take are the usual deductions (taxes, health insurance, etc.). If they claim that you owe them something (if they say you did not return a laptop, for instance), they must take you to small claims court to recover those monies.
