Question

Hello SAAB Mechanics,
We own a SAAB 9-3 convertable.   A extensive complete check-up was done a year ago. Recently "tighten gas cap" came up on car monitor.   We had a diagnostic done at GM/SAAB dealership. Everything came up fine except it registered car needed new gas cap. This was not the problem and the more knowledgeable person from last year no longer works at GM/SAAB delership. They would not reimburse me for my trouble, so I am trying to research on my own. What are some possible problems?

Hello! The two most common failure points are:

1) Vent valve, accessed at the right rear wheel-house.

2) Fuel tank. The tanks are plastic and often crack or fail to seal at the fuel pump flange. You can sometimes remove the back seat and see fuel stains from around the pump, or if you smoke test it, you would see smoke come from around the fuel pump area.

I have seen a few bad purge solenoids, but the Vent valve and fuel tank are (in my opinion) a little more common.
