Question

Just purchased a 2003 and am looking to do some basic modifications. Am interested in forming a solid base handling and performance. Won't be taking it to the track but want for my own satisfaction. Am presently well into my 60's and the crazy days are over. Would appreciate ideas of where to start and recommended products. The car only has 6,000 miles on it but the shocks are leaking and need to be replaced. Should I consider sway bars at the same time? Thanks

Answer

Hello XXXXXXXX, welocme to justanswer!

Well, most of the recommendations I have vary greatly depending on the amount of money you have to spend. As far as the shocks go, I like the Bilstein shocks for everyday driving and occasional track time. They are a pretty good combination of comfort and improved handling. If you want to spend a little more you can go with Pfadt adjustables. They are about twice the price of the Bilsteins and if you want to get seroius about handling they are a good middle of the road choice. You can spend alot on shocks for the C5 but if you are not going to be racing these are both great choices.

As far as sway bars go, they will improve handling. If you are not going to be racing, upgrade the shocks and drive the car and see how it handles to you. The C5 was a pretty good handling car in stock form so you may be satisfied with just a shock upgrade. As far as brands I like the Hochkis for street driving and the Pfadt for the track.

Please let me know if there is anything else I can help you with

Thanks,

Todd

Todd, I am right on with your comments on the handling. It might have been the way I worded the question but I was also addressing the motor and rear end in terms of performance. I am considering a 4.10 rear end and a cold air intake system but wanted varification as well as other items I should consider.

Because the 2003 was the first one with electronic ride control the shocks must also have a kit that allows (fools) the computer into thinking the original shocks are still being used. I asked if the F55 could be programed out and was told no by the local Chevy dealer. I have been told differently and want to confirm that it is true?

The 4.10 is an excellent upgrade with instantly noticeable results. You should be very pleased with it. make sure that you have the speedometer reprogrammed for the new gears or it will be off.

The cold air system is a good start as well. You will probably not motice quite the improvement that the gears gave you but you may notice an improvement. The most noticeable improvement with the air intake is the 2-3 mpg increase with normal driving that I saw after installing mine. The Callaway "honker" is my favorite for the air intake.

As far as the F55 being programmed out, I am sure it can be done but I am not sure what equipment would be needed. I would contact your local dyno tuning shop that does the GM cars in your area. They have the equipment to write custom programs and the programmers usually know what they are doing. The dealer does not have the ability to program it out. The only issue that would come up from it being disabled is a message on the message center and the traction control would not work but that's it.
Most guy just run them this way but the message can get annoying.

As far as other things to consider for engine upgrades:
  • Headers
  • Catback (I like the corsa personally but this is a very personal thing)
  • Dyno tuning (the Ls1 really responds well to dyno tuning)
  • Heads and Cam (these should be done together) +100hp
  • Intake manifold and throttle body ($1000+ with a gain of about 20hp) I recommend the Fast 92mm if you choose this one but the return is not that much considering the investment.
Please let me know if there is anything else I can help you with

Thanks,

Todd
