Question

hi. i am driving a 2002 infiniti i35. took to dealership last week because i heard a "rattling" noise. come to find out it had almost NO oil in it. They did diagnostics on it and said it was ok. Changed the oil and advised me to check the oil every 500 miles to keep an eye on it. I drove @400 and had my brother check it. It was 1 quart low. Does this mean I have ruined my motor?? What do I need to do and why am I losing oil? There is no oil in antifreeze and no smoke when car is running. There is also no oil leak under car.

Optional Information

Year: 2002
Make: Infiniti
Model: I35

Already Tried:
Noise sounded like when you stick something in the spokes of a bicycle tire. I took it to the shop, they said it may start burning oil because I had let it get so low. I do not have any "noticable" oil leak and yet I had to add a quart of oil. They are using Synthetic 5w30 oil in my car. There are @123k miles on the car and I have taken it for routine maintenance.

Answer

you could have dried out a couple of valve seals and it is minutely being consumed into the combustion chamber, but not enough to really see any symptoms besides being down a quart every fourhundred miles, I would nt call it being ruined. what I would do is do a really good motor flush to clear out any sludge that may have formed due to running it on low oil, change it and put some seal conditioner in to swell the seals up so that oil cannot leak into the combustion chamber, and take it from there, it should take care of your problem,(depending on how bad the seals are) . I wouldnt be overly worrried

thanx

Okay, that makes me feel better, but I am a single female that doesn't have much knowledge about these types of things! What would I do to "do" a really good motor flush and the other things you suggested? Should I take my car back to the dealership? Are there any national chains you recommend that may be able to perform this? Are you close to Atlanta so I can take it to you?? =) j/k and what kind of seal conditioner do I need to look for? Is this something that I can do? I apologize for asking so many questions I just don't want to ruin anything. Thank you so much for your time, you don't know how you have helped to put me at ease. Also, do you know how much this may cost?

well, for the flush you would buy a can or bottle of motor flush, and follow direction on back, very easy to do, I would not take it to the dealer, they over charge greatly, I live in connecticut, otherwise I would love to take care of this for you, there are several kinds of seal conditioners, all you would do is ask the clerk at the parts store, the most inexpensive is fine, they all are pretty much the same, I dont know what kind of repair chains you guys have down there, so If you decide to have a repair chain do it , just ask a couple of people who is a reputable shop, if you do it yourself it will be much cheaper, a shop should not charge you more than fifty dollars or so to do it, I also recommend bringing a male friend with you or have them bring it in by their self, because unfortunately, some shops tend to take advantage of women who dont know much about their vehicles, its very sad but sometimes true, just be stern with them, "I want an engine flush and new oil put in" then you can add a can of sealant yourself, just make sure you put it in the oil not anywhere else lol. anything else you need just let me know
