Question

I have a 5kw Kohler gas marine generator in my 2004 Glastron 279 boat. It was working fine for a while, but now when I start it, after a few seconds it just shuts down.; I can then restart it, but in a few seconds it shuts down again. Do you have any recommendations on what I should check or do before calling a boat mechanic? Thanks, XXXXX XXXX

I haven't tried anything so far. It's the generator not the engine which is having the problem.

Hi Scott,

 

I have never primed it or had to prime it. The generator was installed new in 2004 when I bought the boat (also new). I don't have the model # here. ( The boat is about an hour and a half away.) The gas is relatively new and both the VolvoPenta engine and the Kohler generator run off the same gas tank (I have no problem starting the VolvoPenta). Thanks, Bruce

Bruce,
Your generator sounds like a fuel problem, as you have adequate gas. There are no warning lights or warning horns sounding or illuminated. The first step I would do is replace the inline fuel filter located above or below the fuel pump.As this is periodic maintenance I would also replace the spark plugs and air filter element.

This wont be a waste of time nor money unless it has been done within 1 year.
