Question

My daughter has a rescued 2 year old Tonkinese cat which she has had for 18 months. When she gave her a home from the Cats Protection she was very traumatised and just hid in corners due to being found by them in a caravan with loads of other cats for breeding purposes. She has come a long way from the cat she first rehomed but she is still very frightened and my daughter has still not been able to hold her or stroke her, only when she has to take her to the vet and the vet holds her and then gives her to my daughter. My daughter has tried virtually everything the vet has suggested even a plug in device which gives out cat smells but she is still very scarred and looks very unhappy. Is there anything else my daughter can try as she feels so sorry for her and just wants to cuddle her. She was thinking about getting another cat for company but would she take to it.
I look forward to hearing from you.

I think she has mainly used Rescue Remedy drops (herbal) and tablets which her vet prescribed for the cat.
Her vet has just said that she should leave the cat alone, but she just wants to hold and be able to stroke her.
Would having another cat help at all, especially as she was so young when she had kittens and they were taken away from and sold - does she miss being a mother.

Accepted Answer

Thank you for the additional information. This is a frustrating situation, because the one thing your daughter wants (to hold and pat this kitty) may not happen. Not all cats like to be held, and that may be the case with this kitty. Added to that is the fact that she was not well treated early in life, and this kitty may be standoffish. Since the rescue remedy, prescription meds and feliway did not work, it is unlikely that anything else would work. In time this kitty may tolerate being patted, but your daughter should prepare herself for the possibility that this might not happen. Forcing contact in a kitty this age that is already shy can do more damage than good, and I do agree that she should be left to do what makes her happy. If your daughter has access to a veterinary behaviorist, this specialist can be very helpful in getting her kitty to enjoy affection.

The addition of another kitty may or may not be helpful. It could make things much worse, or much better. Unfortunately, it is impossible to tell until you introduce another kitty. Hopefully your daughter can find a way to break this kitty out of her shell, but she needs to be prepared that it might not happen. Please let me know if I can be of further assistance. If this has been helpful, please hit the green accept button. Best of luck :)
