Question

32. Dole Pineapple, Inc. is concerned that the 16-ounce can of sliced pineapple is being overfilled. Assume the standard deviation of the process is .03 ounces. The quality control department took a random sample of 50 cans and found that the arithmetic mean weight was 16.05 ounces. At the 5 percent level of significance, can we conclude that the mean weight is greater than 16 ounces? Determine the p-value.

Accepted Answer

(a) m = 16, s = 0.03, n = 50, x-bar = 16.05

H0: The cans are not overfilled, that is m <= 16

Ha: The cans are over-filled, that is m > 16

Upper-tailed z- test for a population mean; a = 0.05

Critical z- score = 1.645

Decision rule: Reject H0 if the test z- score > 1.645

z = (x-bar - m)/(s/sqrt n) = (16.05 - 16)/(0.03/sqrt 50) = 11.79

Since 11.79 > 1.645, we reject H0 and accept Ha

Conclusion: It appears that the cans are being overfilled.

(b) Upper-tailed p- value for z = 11.79 is 0

The probability (risk) of rejecting H0 if it were true is 0.
