Question

I have 3 cats. 1 female and 2 males. The 2 males were bought for my step daughters as kittens. They were in my husbands house for about a year, then after we were married I bought my female in the house. They are all inside cats. They are all fixed.I have one of the males that is peeing on my rugs. I have to pick up any rug or towel from off the floor or he will pee on them. He did not do it before I bought my female in the house, so Im not sure if it is because of her or not.

Why is he doing this?? How can I stop him from doing it?

I know from personal experience how frustrating it is when a cat is urinating inappropriately. I will give you some tips on how to help get him back to peeing in the box but every cat is unique and they may or may not work.

First, I would try to get a urine sample or bring him to your vet to get a urine sample. We need to rule out a medical cause first. It sounds behaviorial but I have had many cats with crystals in their urine causing irritation and once that is fixed they stop.

If his urine is normal, then I would try to change his behavior. I would first make sure you have a litter box for each cat plus one(so four litter boxes in your case). Try using a litter called Cat Attract. This litter works very well and has worked on two of my cats that were peeing/pooping outside the box. It has special phermones and texture that cats like. It is good that you have thrown out the rugs and tried to get rid of any odor. Anxiety in cats (such as an addition of another cat) can cause them to urinate inappropriately. Anti-anxiety drugs such as prozac have worked well to help with inappropriate urination. I would start simple first and work your way up until something works. My own personal cat stopped peeing out of the box as soon as I added just one more box..other cats need more "coaxing." Hope this helps.
