Question

I have a Gateway E-4000 where the CD and dvd drives no longer load. Device manager indicates a yellow ! that the drivers for these drives are likely corrupted. I have tried to update the drivers, uninstall the drive and restart the computer none have corrected the problem. I find that the Drivers (red) cd that came with the computer when examined on another computer does not list drivers for the cd and dvd drives. I have tried an external optical iomega cd/dvd USB connected drive that works on other computers, it does not work on this gateway. It also shows up in devise manager with a yellow !. Something is blocking the use of a cd and dvd internal and external drives on this computer. Do you have a suggestion on how to correct this problem. Thanks XXX XXX-XXXX Fred

Answer

Hi,

Try this:
http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/CDgone-file8.html

Download that, run cdgone.reg (not the other file, just cdgone.reg)

Restart your computer, drives should be back...

Answer

Hi,

I can't call you, unfortunately.

What happens when you double click on cdgone.reg and try to add it?

I downloaded cdgone and got

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}]
"UpperFilters"=-
"LowerFilters"=-

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Cdr4_2K]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Cdralw2k]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Cdudf]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\UdfReadr]

What do I do with this?

Answer

It shouldn't open in a text editor

Right click on the file and see if it has an option like "Run" "Install" or "Add to Registry" or something similar

Rob

Accepted Answer

Or you can do it this way:

Click on Start and then Run...

Type in regedit, and then press OK

In regedit, click on File, and then Import

Enter the filename or otherwise locate the ".reg" file you want to enter, and press OK

The contents of that ".reg" file will be entered into the registry.
