Question

My cat is on caninsulin. I have not been able to get him regulated. He crashed two weeks ago when is insulin doses were 17 units two times per day. After a re-check from vet his bg was 8.6. He was tested at home with urine strips, was doing okay for a week, then on day 8 an increase in water, and urinalysis was 2%. Under adivice of my vet his insulin shots have moved up at one unit per day. Today at 8 units. How much can he tolerate? Do I continue? Should he be switched to different insulin?

Already Tried:
He is on a raw food diet. He also gets chicken necks to clean his teeth and for the extra protein. He also gets wet food product by Merrick, called turducken. He grooms, and keeps himself clean. Water intake seems to be about on cup in 24 hour period, however, of late has increase when his urine strips showed increase in sugar. He is constantly hungry, CONSTANTLY!!! Not sure what would satisfy. I thought with raw food this would help. He does like the EVO dry, which is low-carb, but my vet suggested he not eat. HELP!

Hi,

The first thing I would recommend doing (if you haven't already) is have your cat tested for Cushing's disease.   This is a rare adrenal gland disease, but the main symptom in cats is diabetes that can't be regulated.   Here is a link to a page about it:

If this test is negative then you may want to switch to a different type of insulin. Some pets will respond better to one than to another. Though the one you are using usually works well.

Some diabetic cats respond well to high fiber diets others do to low carb diets.   I'm not sure why your vet didn't want you to try the Evo.    Being high protein and low carb, its very similar (only with better ingredients) to the prescription diabetic food Purina D/M.
