Hi there,

How many such episodes has she had?

Is it after exercise or walking?

Where do you put the towels?

Thanks,

Terri

Answer

Dear friend,

I am so sorry your girl has this trouble.

She may have arthritis which does get worse when the dog is resting:

http://placervillevet.com/arthritis.htm

Dogs can get heatstroke or become hypoglycemic:

You can read about this problem here

http://www.canine-epilepsy-guardian-angels.com/heat_illnesses.html

http://www.canine-epilepsy-guardian-angels.com/hypoglycemia.htm

She may have a condition called Exercise induced collapse in Labrador retrievers. Although we do not understand this condition completely, but we do know that it is hereditary. There is now a genetic test available through University of MN to diagnose this condition.

Here is a website from the University of Minnesota that does a really good job at discussing the condition

http://www.vdl.umn.edu/ourservices/canineneuromuscular/taylor2008/home.html

Here is another website that can also give more information about this

http://www.working-retriever.com/library/taylor.html

If she is arthritic I recommend Dasuquin:

It's an excellet glucosimine product. You can get the best price at http://www.petmeds.com/

Here are testimonials:

http://www.zootoo.com/dogs_hipjoint/dasuquin

Dogs can have strokes too:

http://www.howtodothings.com/pets-and-animals/a3350-how-to-treat-canine-stroke.html

http://www.vetspecialists.co.uk/06_Animal_Welfare/Neurology_Facts/Stroke.html

She may just have become deydrated or hypoglycemic or hurt herself.

There is also a less serious condition that mimics stroke/seizure called Vestibular syndrome:

http://www.marvistavet.com/html/body_vestibular_disease.html

Check all over her and in her mouth for any abnormalities.Does she have any painful areas? Perhaps she injured a disc or verebra.

She should be seen by her vet ASAP for evaluation and medication if she continues to have these episodes.

Please let me know how she is doing. I will be here late.

I hope she will be fine.

Sincerest best wishes,

Terri

can her eating watermelon cause these symptoms?could a change in food cause these episodes?after 4 years of the same food iams, she had grown tired of eating this food .so i changed to purina dog show.i dont believe she has arthirtis, she is a very active dog and these episodes just started 2 weeks ago.one on aug 15 and the other aug 23.she moves around well.she has no pain.i live in on a fixed income and the vet can be very expensive, thats why i thought i would try this first.nothing like this has ever happened to her before, when she can't get up and walk she gets very scared and shakes and starts to pant very heavy.after about 15 minutes or so she is fine.she's been acting normal all morning long.these episodes seem to happen at nite never during the day.thanks for your help and concern terri.jimmy

Hi Jimmy,

The only way watermelon could affect her is if she is diabetic and reacting to the sugar.

Stop the watermelon and see if her issues resolve.

It may just be rest induced arthritic pain.

Please let me know what happens.

Warmest best wishes,

Terri
