Question

My 2and a half year old min schnz has had diarrhea about 6 times today. We just returned from hols and my dad brought him over this morn and he was very reserved. Then the diarrhea started. I offered him some plain pasta about 2hrs ago he ate a little and about an hour later was sick and then out for the scoots it is an orangy reddish colour, i dont no what my mum gave them this morn. At present he is sleeping in his bed i have listened to his tummy and it is gurggling. I also have a 16 and a half yrs min schnz and he is fine. I hav some synulox 50mg that I was given when the old boy had a dose of the scoots and I did not need to use them all. I was thinking in giving him one cause i have read a bit about them and they help gastric is that correct. Look forward to your reply.

Answer

Hello,

Sorry to hear your dog is ill.

I would not give the synulox right now because he has vomited at least once and giving oral medications right now may get vomited up.

Instead, fast him from water for 8 hours and food for at least 12 hours. When you start giving water, only give small amounts at a time so he doesn't vomit it. When you start giving food, only give small amounts at a time of a bland diet, like baby food (chicken or turkey flavors), boiled chicken or boiled hamburger meat. This will be easy on his stomach and help him feel better. Continue bland, small frequent meals for the next couple of days, and once the stools are firmed up, gradually wean him back onto his normal diet. For now, avoid all treats and leash walk only so that he can't eat/ chew anything that he shouldn't. Once the stools are coming out normal, you should also notice the color becoming more normal.

Best of luck, and let me know if I can help further.

I would generally take my dog to the vet if it has not shown signs of stopping within 24hrs or so. I will try fasting and see how he is I dont want him to get dehydrated.

Accepted Answer

No, but the only way to prevent dehydration with constant vomiting is to give fluids under the skin or Iv which you cannot do without a vet. Dehydration would take quite a bit of vomiting and time to hurt your dog, so I would try the above advice and as stated, seek a vet if not getting better or worsening.
